Day 3 (June 5) Tivoli and the Gargano Peninsula
The bus left the hotel in Rome at rush hour and we experienced first hand a marmelade traffico - traffic jam. Our fearless bus driver, Julio, skillfully navigated out of Rome toward Tivoli.
Hadrian's Villa is expansive, really a town. The grounds are neatly kept and there were very few people when we arrived. We enjoyed the large old olive trees that dotted the property as well as the antiquities. The morning was cool, pleasant, and well suited for personal exploration. We left Tivoli before noon and began our trek east, across Italy to the Adriatic coast.
The trip to Vieste and the Gargano Peninsula was beautiful with vinyards and olive groves covering the countryside. The descent into Vieste was scenic and required Julio to negotiate many hairpin turns and a narrow road. The Hotel Seggio is striking and one of our favorites on the trip. We entered on a narrow unimpressive stone street but the views on the opposite side of the hotel are marvelous. Vieste in an amazing little medieval fishing village on the Adriatic coast. Almost all of the structures are white which is enchanting and very different from some of the multicolored towns on the Amalfi Coast and Cinque Terre.
After the bus ride, cocktails and dinner at the Hotel Seggio were welcome. The dinner included antipasto of tuna on tomato and fish omelette, a secundo of mackeral filet, and dolce of ice cream and pineapple.
