A delicious lunch of mozzarella di bufala and gelato at an organic water buffalo farm before we traveled to the ancient Greek temples at Paestum.
Paestum has three exquisitely preserved Doric Greek temples. One of the temples, the Temple of Hera, dates from 550 BC and is one of the oldest Greek temples still standing in the world. (Slide Show)
Day 7 (June 9) Greek Paestum and Positano
Our first stop today was lunch at an organic water buffalo farm. We toured the super high tech farm and saw the process of making mozzarella di bufala. Our lunch was several types of mozzarella, delicious bread, and gelato.
The visit to Paestum was amazing on several dimensions. The Greek temples were very impressive and we spent almost all of our time observing these amazing structures. There are three temples dating to about 500 BC that are miraculously well preserved. We were so fascinated by the temples we did not spend any time in the museum. Also, the site is rather large and there was considerable ground to cover.
Nancy's father was in this area in World War II during the invasion by Allied Forces at Salerno. She recalled that her father either had a picture of these temples or mentioned in a letter he came to see these temples at some point. The impact of the realization that her father was here in this place so many years ago was very moving. Travel can affect us in so many different and unsuspecting ways.
Our next stop was Positano on the gorgeous Amalfi Coast. The final part of the ride to Positano was beautiful along the striking cliffs. Donald took us on a quick orientation of Positano and the group broke up to find places for dinner. We had dinner with Stan and Jeanne at the Wine-Dark House at an outside table in a lovely setting. The owner-waiter was talkative and made every effort to be sure we had the right wine and a good meal. We had a simple meal of grilled fish and potatoes and it was just what we wanted.
