Day 4 (June 6) Vieste and the Adriatic Coast
This morning, the Rick Steves group boarded the good ship Valentina in Vieste for a cruise around the Gargano Peninsula. Gary went on the cruise but Nancy decided to explore Vieste instead. The day was sunny and great for photos on the photogenic coast with white limestone cliffs and turquiose water. Grottos hollowed out by the sea in the limestone cliffs yawned at us as we passed by. Some of the grottos were large enough for the boat to squeeze into. We passed by abandoned fishing platforms called trabucchi that once provided fish for the local people. A stop at one of the lovely beaches gave us a taste of the attraction of the Gargano Peninsula for Italian and German tourists.
For lunch, Donald arranged a pasta making demonstration by the chef at the Hotel Seggio that included eating some of the product. We ate three-bean soup with hand made pasta follwed by a dessert wine called mocatta with biscotti.
After siesta time, we walked along the sea past the lighthouse, cathedral, and old fort. We saw Stan, Jeanne, Chris and Sharon from our group at Gelateria Sotto Zero. So, of course, we stopped to try the gelato. A very good idea.
At 6:30, we met at the Hotel Seggio swimming pool to introduce our bus buddies. It was a beautiful setting surrounded by white cliffs and the sea and lots of fun as people who go on Rick Steves tours are quite clever. After introductions, a small group went to the Borgo Antico for dinner. What a lovely location outside overlooing the harbor and lighthouse. Nancy and Gary shared an outstanding grilled sea bass with vegetables. The food was deliciously fresh and one of the best meals of the trip, improved significantly by the beautiful evening and delightful company.
